Apple made iOS 4 available on Monday, June 21. Apple kicked off an action-packed week today with the full release of iOS 4, its newest operating system for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The download is free for both iPhone and iPod Touch users, but it is incompatible with first-generation models of either device. The Apple iPhone 3G will support most iOS 4 features except multitasking and home screen backgrounds.

Since the release of the iOS 4.0 on June 21 last, many people had complained of the autonomy of their phone. Macworld U.S. has conducted a test involving the autonomy of 3G and 3G with firmware 3.1.3 and firmware 4. It was tested under different uses (games, surfing and 3G wireless, downloading a movie, telephone …).

To see what difference iOS 4 made in terms of laptop battery life with iOS 3 on the iPhone 3GS we ran the same tests yet again. It turns out that downgrading an iPhone 3GS is no easy feat and our attempts at doing so failed on the iPhone 3GS phone at the Macworld office.

Here are the results obtained by the U.S. site:

As shown in both tables, the upgrade to Apple A1079 iOS 4.0 has caused a moderate increase in autonomy for the iPhone 3G and a substantial increase for the iPhone 3G. Indeed, the iPhone 3G takes 10 minutes more with the firmware 4.0 installed. The iPhone 3G takes him 35 minutes more.

If you think back to 2005, you’ll remember that the Motorola RAZR phone was all the rage. Not entirely unlike the Apple iPhone today, it was the sleek phone that everyone wanted. But if you happened to be on the largest carrier in the U.S., Verizon, you couldn’t get one. Again, sound familiar?

It wasn’t until just about a year later that a version (the V3c) finally came to Verizon. It was a long wait, but I was excited to finally have access to the device, I pre-ordered one the first day I could. When I finally got it, there were some surprises in store. Rather than having the same colorful user interface that my friends’ RAZRs (on other networks) had, it had some god-awful red proprietary UI made by Verizon itself. It also came with the added bonus of having Bluetooth file transfer capabilities disabled by Verizon. And it was loaded to the brim with Verizon’s V CAST garbage.

So while part of the wait was undoubtedly due to Motorola getting a CDMA version of the device ready to sell, a bigger part was likely Verizon negotiating and working to load the device up with their crapware. That doesn’t speak well for the supposed Verizon iPhone.

Rumors of the iPhone coming to Verizon are louder now than they’ve ever been. There is no doubt that Apple has been working on a CDMA version of the device (codename: N92) for some time now, and perhaps is even in the process of manufacturing it as we speak. But whether that device is destined for Verizon or Sprint (the other U.S. CDMA provider) remains to be seen. Undoubtedly, Apple wants their device on the largest carrier in the country (Verizon), but they’ll also undoubtedly will have to make sacrifices to make that happen. And Apple doesn’t like to make sacrifices.

Much has been written about how Apple will probably have to take a lower subsidy from the other U.S. carriers if they move beyond their exclusive deal with AT&T (which gives them an outrageous subsidy that adds billions of dollars to their bottom line). But there’s not a lot of talk about the more fundamental thing Apple may have to give up by putting the device on Verizon: control.

Remember, when Apple first launched the iPhone in 2007, the first carrier they went to talk to about a deal was Verizon. The two sides could not come to an agreement at the time, and the main issue was undoubtedly control. Apple had basically no leverage at the time as they were the new player in the space with zero market share. Verizon knew that and probably laughed at some of Apple’s demands. So Apple went to AT&T, and the rest is history.

Those Apple/Verizon discussions have undoubtedly been had many times since the massively successful launch (and subsequent updated version launches) of the iPhone. Both sides know that it makes sense for the most popular smartphone to be on the most popular network. But the question remains: who is willing to give up something to make that happen?

The past week, I’ve written a number of posts with the same basic refrain: the carriers suck. Each of those posts was in the context of Android, and specifically how the carriers are taking advantage of the openness of that mobile OS to take us back in time 5 years where they had complete control over the U.S. market — the time before the iPhone. Verizon is the worst perpetrator so far. Is there any doubt they want to do the same thing with the iPhone?

Apple has announced releasing a new software update for popular iPhone 4, and that new firmware solution, iOS 4.0.1 (8A306) for the iPhone 4, 3GS, and 3G. This new update addresses the reception issue which is experienced when the phone is tightly griped in the left hand. That forthcoming update is expected to include a number of fixes that go beyond the reporting of signal strength on the iPhone.

According to Apple web page, the new iOS 4.0.1 software update for iPhone comes with various fixes and improvements, including the following: “Improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display.” At the same time, Apple notes that “This update contains security content originally included in previous iOS Updates.”

The cosmetic software fix, however, does not address antenna issues that some users have experienced specifically with the iPhone 4 hardware. Apple is expected to reveal its reaction to that issue at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday.

To update your iPhone to iOS 4.0.1, all you need to do is to connect your iPhone with your computer via USB and start iTunes. You should now see a message as shown below. Simply click on “Download and Install” button to get on to the new iOS 4.0.1 firmware.

iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS come with full support for iOS 4.0.1, while iPhone 3G, although supports the solution, does not support all the features included in it, such as multitasking and wallpapers, though it seems that even these can be enabled.

Apple has also released iOS 3.2.1 for iPad, addressing a number of issues including Wi-Fi connectivity issues as promised in an Apple support document posted several months ago:

On the surface, much about the Que seems familiar. Like Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500)’s Kindle — a $350 e-reader that has sold more than 500,000 units since its launch in 2007 — the Que displays pages in grayscale E-Ink, designed to be easier on the eyes than conventional screen displays. Like the Kindle, the Que will allow users to download books and magazines wirelessly (via AT&T (T, Fortune 500); the Kindle uses Sprint (S, Fortune 500)). To counter Amazon’s giant library of downloadable books, Plastic Logic has inked a deal with Barnes & Noble. It will also fetch digital versions of publications such as USA Today, for a subscription fee.

Like the iPhone, the Que features a single physical button that takes you to the home page. Instead of the Kindle’s awkward keyboard and page forward/back buttons, it has a pop-up touch-screen keyboard and navigates pages with the flick of a finger.

But that’s where the similarity to current e-readers ends. To see what’s new about the Que, look under the hood: There’s no silicon in the screen. All its transistors are made of plastic. This is the result of years of research by professors at the Cavendish Labs in Cambridge, England. Five years later this research yielded an e-reader that is fundamentally flexible, unlike the Kindle, with its breakable glass screen.

Soon after the company launched in 2007, CEO Richard Archuleta built an international organization. The research arm stayed in Cambridge, but every other business function was sent abroad: manufacturing moved to Dresden, Germany; assembly, to Taiwan; and headquarters, where most of the employees work, to Silicon Valley, the better to poach local talent.

“It’s very easy to get engineers excited about joining this company,” grins Archuleta, the former head of Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500)’s notebook business.

Disappointingly, Plastic Logic has played it safe by encasing the flexible screen in a more rigid plastic case. “We did prototypes that were rigid on one end and floppy on another,” says Anusha Nirmalananthan, Plastic Logic’s product manager. “We found users had trouble getting used to that.”

Still, the Que retains a significant “wow” factor. It is legal-paper size but weighs a mere pound, three ounces less than the comparable Kindle DX. Plastic Logic regularly drops the Que on concrete, and it survives. The battery will last for days on a single charge. Plug it into your computer and you can download any PDF or text file. The device can hold thousands of PDFs and tens of thousands of books.

Archuleta is pitching the Que squarely at business users. It will offer the ability to annotate documents. You can type on virtual sticky notes or draw on the screen. (The Kindle can do none of these things.) The Que’s price point hadn’t been announced at press time but will likely fall between $400 and $800.

That’s too rich for some analysts. “The magic number for an e-reader is $199,” insists Allen Weiner of Gartner Research.

Win or lose with the Que, Plastic Logic’s research continues. It is developing color e-reader technology with a grant from the U.K. government. It hopes to launch a color Que in 2011. Archuleta has proposed a military application: a foldout map that could be wirelessly updated in the field.

“You will see bendable, foldable, rollable readers,” he says. “Whatever the marketplace wants.

The report also notes the new phone has a 2.8-inch screen and smaller body, which is consistent with photos that surfaced on iLounge last June. The device would be manufactured by Taiwan-based Asustek subsidiary Pegatron.

A “worldmode” iPhone would be a colossal win for Apple. The device could support any major carrier worldwide. Apple wouldn’t need to sell different versions of the iPhone to support different networks, and would most likely see a huge increase in sales.

This news could be bad for AT&T, which has been snubbed by Apple and users alike for poor coverage, dropped calls, delayed MMS support, and lack of tethering.

The OTR report says Verizon and Apple have already reached an agreement to sell the new iPhone next year, despite Verizon’s recent advertising attacks on the iPhone.

Of course, switching to Verizon might solve some issues with poor coverage and dropped calls, but users might have to fork out an additional $30 a month for a 5GB monthly “unlimited” tethering plan and $15 a month for exchange service.
