I have followed every step to convert a song from my itunes so I can use it as a ring tone but is not working.
I have also read admin comment from the 27 July “To convert the .m4a version to the .m4r version you have to:

1) Change your folder options by going to “My Computer”

2) Click on “View” and then uncheck the “Hide extension for known file types”… apply and ok it

3) Then right click the .m4a version on your desktop, go to “Properties”. You should now be able to edit the file.

4) Click Save, you’ll notice that the Itunes symbol has now change to ringtone

5) Open up the file from your desktop and DONE!

Now just click and drag it to your Iphone… it comes up in your “Sound Settings” as a “Custom” Ringtone instead of a “Purchased” one.”
I can’t even find “my computer folder so I can do this why isn’t the steps easier

I done as you mentioned and the thing was when I drag into iTune Library the Ringtone box in iTune Library contain a song I converted but Ringtone in iPhone Library there was no song was converted and that I could not use song as ringtone.
Please advise and thanks.

It still wont work… how do you know between an m4a & m4r in itunes ???

I am having the same problem as this person:

When I add the file back to the library it adds to the library folder, not to the ringtone folder. Also, the extension is being renamed .m4r, but it’s not actually changing the file format. Is this the problem? Please e-mail me at kimberlyodo@gmail.com.

I followed your instructions and the first ringtone went fine. Now I’m having a problem deleting the “short” file, so I can’t go any further. I triple-checked all of my steps and can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. For some reason ITunes just won’t let me delete.

I’m having the problem where I get the m4r file to my desktop and I drag intot Itunes but nothing appears. How do I fix it?

For those who are getting it to show up in iTunes under your ringtones folder of your library and your iPhone ringtones tab in iTunes, but NOT showing up on your iPhone try the following.

1) Go to your ringtones tab in iTunes with your phone plugged in. Select to NOT sync any of your ringtones.

2) Sync your phone (this will remove any current ringtones that might be messing up the process)

3) Next go into your iTunes library and make sure that any .m4a versions of the song are deleted. IMPORTANT: If your original version of the song was an .m4a, create an mp3 version (follow similar steps as in the OP, but convert to mp3 instead). Make sure that when you create the mp3, you create it for the WHOLE song before deleting or else you will lose your song!

4) Once you have deleted all of the .m4a versions, go back to the ringtones tab and select to sync all of your ringtones (or selected ringtones with the appropriate boxes check, however you normally have it set).

5) You should now see the ringtone appear in on your phone.

The issue seems to be that the phone would get confused if there were both .m4r and .m4a versions of a song that you were trying to put on your phone. So my solution is to delete any .m4a versions.

same as Mel, it doesn’t show up even on my computer in iTunes as a ringtone even though it now has a .m4r extension. And quite frankly, I bought this as a ringtone!!
I see lots of people with probs but so far no posted solutions

I’ve done all the steps but when I drag it back into itunes it doesn’t show up as a ringtone at all.
is there someting that i’m missing? i juste something got my phone – does it have something to do with the version of itunes?

Hi, I am having trouble with the the save it to your desk top part, it’s saves but not as a m file, I rename it .m4r but can not get it to save in the ringtones part of I tunes.. Please help…! Thank you
